In case anyone was wondering where I’ve been, this has been in the oven for the last few days.
In coming days, we will hear announcements from NASA, NOAA and others that
2015 was the hottest year in the modern instrumental record.
There will be pushback from the likes of climate denier Ted Cruz, who
uses a misreading of satellite temperature data to claim, as he did
on Seth Meyer’s show – “no warming in 18 years”
This is the story of how that distortion came to be.

Now is the time to support the 2016 Dark Snow Field campaign. More about that here.

Probably sore his side lost the war, being down in Alabamy that would be the US Civil War.
This Brit, or Limey as we were called when cross-decking etc., found James McPherson’s ‘Battle Cry of Freedom’ very informative.
Actually Christy is from California, but he has a strong evangelical background, and I suspect that that informs both his politics and view of god as the final arbiter of man’s fate, much the same as Spencer.
He is not full on denier, but more of a lukewarmer, and probably has dug himself into an ideological hole so deep that his cognitive dissonance will prevent himself from climbing out at this point, despite what the future trend of warming shows. He is also in his mid sixties, so maybe he doesn’t have the ability to really care about climate consequences 30 or 50 years hence.
If he lives in California then how is he connected with UAH (University of Alabama Huntsville)? Does he have any teaching duties or is he only using UAH as a mail drop?
Well, he was born and raised in CA., went to school at Cal State Fresno, and Univ. of Illinois. So technically, he isn’t a good ole boy southerner. Having said that, he also got a masters of divinity from Golden Gate Baptist Seminary, which is allied with the Southern Baptist Convention, so there’s that.
Now that he has been in Alabama for all these years, the ‘culture’ may have rubbed off on him. But let’s give him the benefit of the doubt, and assume that maybe he isn’t at all racist, he still is very likely heavily ideologically influenced by the southern church, and they seem to be ideologically wed to the extreme right, who seem to be ideologically wed to the idea that AGW is a ‘lefty’ construct, rather than a valid observation of the data, based on known physics, and empirical evidence.
I never understood Christian’s suspicion of lefties. If the labels “left” and “right” would have been in vogue before 1791 then I am certain that Jesus would have carried the label “left-wing radical”. Good jews would have never associated with tax collectors and prostitutes but Jesus did. Good jews would have never broke the law but Jesus did (doing anything on the Sabbath, including healing, was strictly forbidden)
Anyone who wants to delve into Jesus’s likely political affiliation should check out the website “Jesus Is A Liberal”. http://www.jesusisaliberal.org/
The site has been inactive for some time, but it’s still available. The “hate mail from good Christians” page is lots of fun, and their demented rantings parallel what climate change deniers write, further cementing the link between “good” Christians and climate change denial.
Well as biblical scholar Robert Price likes to say, “The bible is used like a ventriloquist’s dummy. You can get it to say whatever you want it to say”.
For a detailed look at the good, the bad and the ugly of the bible take a look at this site:

Lionel – Actually, the proper name of the war was “The War of Northern Aggression”. It was ‘sanitized’ to the “Civil War” by the Yankees afterwards. The winner gets to write the history books.
and that slavery thing? like, dude, totally a non issue.

Thanks, Eric, for affirming again for my contention that racism and climate denial have large crossover.
The winner gets to write the history books? LOL—-that’s certainly true, and the history books of today mostly tell the truth about the War of the Southern Rebellion/Secession/Aggression/Keep Slavery Alive in the U.S.
The “losers” get to whine endlessly about how theirs was the “noble cause” and gloss over the fact that their heroes committed treason in the name of enslaving other human beings.
I have lived in northern VA on a corner of the Manassas Battlefield for 45+ years now, and the folks who believe as Eric does are slowly dying out even here. Perhaps when they are all gone, it will be easier for us to deal with climate change denial, since, as Peter reminds us, racism (and the Civil War) and AGW denial ARE linked—-they need to go in the same grave.
