Walrus Haulouts Have Begun Again for the Year

Really stunning video from US Geological Survey.

Tech Insider:

This year, the Fish and Wildlife Service told the Post that there are already between 5,000 and 6,000 walruses on shore in August. Haul outs don’t usually start until September, but they’re happening more in recent years as Arctic sea ice continues to decline. Experts expect more walruses to gather through October.

President Barack Obama arrives in Alaska to visit the Arctic and draw attention to climate change today. But if we pay attention, there are plenty of signs of a changing climate already visible in nature.

  1. “if we pay attention, there are plenty of signs of a changing climate already visible in nature. “

Chelsea Harvey (with the assistance of Chris Mooney) has covered this topic well this year in the Washington Post, reporting on August 12th that a repeat of last year’s Walrus haul out appeared to be imminent, and on August 27th, she confirmed reports of 5,000-6,000 being sighted at Point Lay, Alaska.

Yesterday Andrew Freedman reported in Mashable that around 35,000 Walrus were congregated in the same area, which was much earlier for haul outs than in previous years. After a major storm swept through the area locals were surprised to see none of the mammals in sight. There is concern for the safety of the young calves since they may have grown weary and weak with time as the storm continued.

    Another strong sign . . .

  2. We need to pay more attention to phenology (and I’m not speaking of phrenology, the study of why the bumps on the heads of paid deniers like Russell Cook prove that they are mentally and morally deficient—hasn’t anyone wondered why Russell always wears visors and ball caps?—it’s camouflage!)

Just as was mentioned on the recent bee post, long-evolved patterns of behavior and migration are being disrupted by climate change. Can the walrus adapt? Perhaps, but the video points out just how much of a strain that may be on a population that is already classified as “threatened”. If things get badly out of sync, it could be the final straw for many species.

It’s interesting to note that one of the major feeding areas for the Walrus in the Chukchi Sea is exactly where Shell intends to drill, and a major portion of the leases that have been sold so far are in areas that the walruses frequent.

  3. How I love living rent-free in “d.o.g.”‘s head, there is ammunition lying around in here everywhere on silver platters.

    How ’bout first proving ….

    – that I am in any kind of pay-for-performance arrangement with anybody
    – that I lie as a requirement of the line above
    – that I deny climate change
    – that I wear ball caps, plural, or that I wear them, singular
    – that I am mentally deficient
    – that I am morally deficient

Have any of you other fellows noticed how “d.o.g.” has yet to actually provide you with a scintilla of evidence you can use yourselves to prove such accusations hurled at me? The man is literally all show and no go. Ye must bee-lievvvve, lest ye be deemed a heretic and unworthy of his favor. As opposed to seeing text somewhere or hearing a transcript where you can say, “yep, there’s something any impartial jury would nail him to the wall with.”

Man, that li’l problem just drives you fellows up the wall and out screaming into the night, doesn’t it?

    1. He-e-e-e-e’s b-a-a-a-a ck! Russell the Heartland Whore, earning his whore’s dollar. And as delusional as ever, spouting his BS about us “proving” that he’s a Heartland Whore. Does Russell NOT understand that by his words and deeds here on Crock and what he does as a Heartland Whore that he has proved all of the following, so it follows that we here on Crock don’t have to? (And particularly the last two).

      – that I am in any kind of pay-for-performance arrangement with anybody
      – that I lie as a requirement of the line above
      – that I am mentally deficient
      – that I am morally deficient

As for proving his one– “that I wear ball caps, plural, or that I wear them, singular”, I would direct everyone to Russell’s rap sheet on desmogblog at:

      http://desmogblog.com/russell-cook

….where one can see a photo of Russell…….WEARING A BALL CAP!!!

And if one doesn’t trust desmogblog, go to Russell’s horseshit website and see the EXACT SAME PICTURE, presumably put there by Russell himself

      http://gelbspanfiles.com/?page_id=18

(WARNING!! Don’t stay on his site for too long—-if you do, it will eat your brain worse than those amoeba thingies that are spreading because of global warming).

As for proving this one– “that I deny climate change”, if you blow up the pic of the ball cap Russell is wearing, you will see that the badge on it says:

      NATURE
      not human activity
      RULES THE CLIMATE

Sounds like something a climate change denier would wear to me. And Russell is so proud of being a climate change denier that he shows a pic of him wearing the hat on his freakin’ website!!!!. And then comes here and says I can’t provide “a scintilla of evidence we can use yourselves to prove such accusations hurled at me?”. And I’M the one who is nailed to the wall here?

      BWA-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha, Chortle, and Guffaw!

Yeah Russell, “that li’l problem” of your cluelessness “just drives us fellows up the wall and out screaming into the night”—screaming with laughter, and laughing so hard we’d like to puke (that’s why we go outside, to save the carpet).

      1. PS I don’t adhere to any organized religion, but I do think that some of Jesus’ “teachings” ARE worthwhile life lessons for those who seek to live a good and moral life. Jesus WAS, after all, a liberal, not a lying conservative POS paid climate change denier like you.

I am starting to become annoyed at your disrespectful use of this wise-ass caricature of Jesus and the “thumbs-up” notation, and I’d bet that I’m not alone. In fact, some of the folks in the Old Testament would probably have “smited” you by now for your disrespect, and if and when Judgment Day arrives, I’d bet that you will be cast into the hottest corner of hell (which will be filled with those who, like you, deny AGW, and that will be a fitting end for you).

        1. And like I said before, and potentially what Jesus himself might suggest, you need to lighten up a bit on the “thumbs up” thing. No disrespect is intended whatsoever, in fact, quite the opposite. Some might even say my lack of profanity and my positive attitude toward you all ( http://climatecrocks.com/2014/11/05/alex-adair-make-me-feel-better/comment-page-1/#comment-65817 ) would be something that any deity would condone. I suspect what really annoys you is that you have yet to score any knockdowns against me.

          1. Clueless yet again.

Russell now boldly speaks for Jesus?!!! And after being told that his use of the image IS clearly disrespectful as used in the context of his lying bullshit messages, Russell merely doubles down. He even dares to speak for ALL gods with “….any deity would condone” his lying bullshit.

Yep, Russell is going to burn in the hottest corner of hell.

PS to Peter Do you condone what Russell the Condemned is doing here? You are presumably the “”Sinclair” providing the second thumb in:
“Two Thumbs Up for this comment!” — Sinclair & Cook IMO, Russell is becoming as offensive as Dave B, Stonehead, E-Pot, and others among the departed.

PPS This post began with a couple of good comments from redsky and I, but quickly deteriorated as Russell made it “all about him” and his delusions. He doesn’t care a bit about Walrus or climate change impacts. He is merely earning his whore’s dollar by responding to any mention of his name and crapping up blogs with his foolishness—it seems like he has a search engine that alerts him every time his name appears—-I have been conducting a little experiment by throwing his name into comments, mainly as the butt of jokes, and sure enough, here he comes—-every time.

PPPS (and Jesus didn’t have “pink” skin)

      2. Dude, you are talking to me, the owner of that thing on my head. It is not a ballcap, it is the same visor I’m wearing in my ICCC9 video, the visor you complain so bitterly about. Why do you fly off self-made credibility cliffs?

(WARNING!! Don’t stay on GelbspanFiles.com for too long—-if you do, you will discover exactly why “d.o.g.” can’t bring himself to dispute a word I say about the way the ‘industry-corrupted skeptics’ accusation implodes, and you will begin to wonder why your dear leaders painted themselves into a corner they now cannot get out of).

Yep, that’s the button Fred Singer gave me in 2009 …. pinned to my visor. Clearly visible here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6OhfbGHJqo The visor you complained about here http://climatecrocks.com/2014/11/22/the-weekend-wonk-marc-morano-and-the-merchants-of-doubt/comment-page-1/#comment-67643 right underneath that same Youtube link.

Man, the embarrassment here is so thick, ya could cut it with a chainsaw.

Meanwhile, would you like to try one of the other of my 5 points, or will you wipe out in a horrific ball of wreckage just like you did here?

        1. Nice try, Russell, but I’m not the one who has “wiped out in a horrific ball of wreckage here”. That honor goes to YOU, as you again do your very fine imitation of the Black Knight (“…it’s only a flesh wound”, he says bloodily).

As for proof of your being “mentally deficient”, I simply cannot believe that you yourself linked us to the Youtube clip of you speaking at ICCC9 in 2014—-you know, the one in which you spend the first 30 seconds essentially telling the world that you are a moron who should not be speaking about anything to do with climate change?. Hell of a strategy, reposting the evidence that your detractors use against you.

As further proof of mental deficiency, you link to one of my comments way back on another thread where I made fun of you by saying—-“….Perhaps you will agree with me when I say that he (Russell) needs to ditch the stupid visor, get some clothes that are color-coordinated and actually fit, and take some public speaking lessons. That might keep him from looking and sounding like an intoxicated HOMELESS guy who wandered in off the street”.

And you now try to say that I was “complaining bitterly” there just because you want to continue with the stupidity of arguing about whether you wear baseball caps or not? All because I made a joke about you hiding the bumps on your head that a phrenologist would find indicative of your moral and mental deficiency? And you say YOU’RE living rent-free in MY mind? LMAO!

Let’s look at the Heartland clip again. Yep, looks like the same button, and the fact that it was given to you by FRED SINGER, perhaps the biggest Heartland Whore and paid AGW denier of all (except maybe for Willie Soon), only reinforces the fact that wearing it makes you a denier. Just like wearing a “Trump for President” button would make you an idiot.

Even better, go to the very last seconds of the ICCC9 clip—11:19 or so, where you are holding your head in such a position that the top edge of the button CLEARLY protrudes ABOVE the top edge of the visor. Then look at the pic from your site, where the ball cap CLEARLY extends ABOVE the top edge of the button, obscuring your hair. Can’t be both ways, Russell, and as I said, it’s kind of dumb and desperate of you to even argue the point.

You waste our time, Russell, and your never-ending demands for “proof” of your “5 points” are laughable. We here on Crock know what you are—you have proven it to us time and again.

          1. I’ll repeat: Dude, you are talking to me, the owner of that thing on my head. It is not a ballcap. The button is removable. I happened to pin it to the visor a bit higher than what I did for the old 2010 photo. Or did you not think of that possibility?

Friends, teachable moment here. “D.o.g.” got a preconceived conclusion in his head and now he is backpedaling while sidestepping my other challenges, while further being apparently unable to comprehend my video’s opening comments as subtle satire which was offered to the audience as a means of saying “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or a climate scientist to question the accusation that skeptic climate scientists are ‘paid industry shills'”.

Observe what happened here, and compare it with 911Truthers or creation science believers do. They’re people with preconceived notions, they sidestep empirical evidence, fail to do any further useful investigation, and get caught making stuff up to save face in a most embarrassing way. Now ask yourselves why “d.o.g.” paints himself into this corner.

Then ask yourselves why you paint yourselves into such corners and whether or not what you do is not anti-science / anti-intellectual. Marine fossils on mountain tops weren’t magically put there by a god just to test the faith of religious fundamentalists, American Airlines Flight 77 was not a missile disguised as a superdecoy plane with folding wings, and I do not wear multiple ballcaps, much less just a single one. And NOT ONE of you can point to any evidence among all your beloved material which proves I or skeptic climate scientists are in a pay-for-performance conspiracy with ANYBODY. Weird thing is, not one of you even tries to look for such evidence.

Once again, introspection time for you-all, a positive suggestion on my part where there is a distinct possibility that critical thinking about how AGW believers defend their beliefs can emancipate ‘yall from enslavement to a political ideology which only diverts you from solving real environmental / social justice problems. I still firmly believe y’all will thank me for this at some later date.

          2. Hmmmm. In the recent real world of Crock posts, we see that 2015 is going to be the hottest year on record, Arctic sea ice is going to be at a near-record low, wild fires are devastating California, the Governor of California is starting to worry about climate refugees, polar bears and walrus are in trouble because of ice melt caused by AGW, more proof is emerging that Exxon lies, PR firms are in spin mode over their work for fossil fuels interests, and the idiot Repugnant candidates for president are showing what idiots they are re: climate change and most everything else.

With all those great possibilities for making meaningful comments, Russell Crock-Crook-Cook the Heartland Whore instead wants to waste our time and distract us from pursuing meaningful truths?

It’s NOT a freakin’ ball cap, Russell?? You pinned the badge HIGHER on the same old visor, so it just LOOKS like a cap rather than a visor? Lord love a duck, but Russell is spinning and squirming mightily here. I DID spend too much time comparing the visor in the ICCC9 video with the cap in the Globspan pic, as can anyone else who cares to waste the time to do so, and I will stand behind the conclusion I reached. PS—in addition to my mocking your clothes, I should have mentioned that you need to stop getting your hair cut for free at the barber school and start seeing a real barber—the hair and its level of visibility is an important part of the evidence re: visor vs. ball cap.

For another thing, I know lots of people who wear badges and pins on hats, Russell, and NONE of them move them, unless it’s to make room for more badges and pins—-why would you move a single badge just 1/4 of an inch?

I have to laugh at Russell’s continued “backpedaling while sidestepping” and obfuscating. I have lost track of the number of questions I have asked Russell about the science of AGW and the number of times I have asked him to engage me in discussion on science. Russell may be deluded and a paid whore for Heartland, but he is apparently smart enough to NOT step into my trap—-he knows that I will eat his lunch on any any AGW or science topic.

That’s why he constantly returns to his meaningless Gelbspan BS (Gelbspan who?) and what he calls his “other challenges”, and now tries to pass off his “I know no science and am just a guy who walked in off the street” BS as “subtle satire which was offered to the audience as a means of saying “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or a climate scientist to question the accusation that skeptic climate scientists are ‘paid industry shills’”.

BWA-Ha-Ha-HA!!!!! Subtle SATIRE? More like NOT-so-subtle STUPIDITY, Russell. Only a freakin” idiot (or someone totally lacking in self-confidence and confidence in his material) who was begging for mercy from the audience would begin a presentation like that. You were being paid to present your meaningless Gelbspan BS, and should have just stood up and done it—-wave your books around and point to a single sentence on p. 269 that you say proves the other 500+ pages of the book are nothing but lies. Let the material speak for itself.

Of course, we all know that the ICCC’s at Heartland are a sham and a scam and the audience isn’t very smart and doesn’t really care about “proof”, science, truth, or logic. Just feed them BS that fits their “preconceived conclusions” about how AGW needs to be attacked to preserve their profits and they’re happy. You DO need to take those public speaking courses, Russell (along with courses in logic, ethics, and science).

After more obfuscatory and irrelevant maundering, Russell ONCE AGAIN closes by patting himself on the back and suggests that HE understands, but that ALL OF US are guilty of faulty reasoning, need to be “introspective”, and that we will all will thank him at some later date for so enlightening us.

(Russell exits stage right to peals of laughter from Crockers, and makes a notation on his Heartland Whore time sheet. He does. after all, only come onto Crock to get paid for spreading BS, and I for one am glad to engage with him and help him suck on the Heartland teat and thereby stay off the dole).

          3. I wear the visor every weekday outside to shield my eyes from the sun. It has a team logo on the front. I’ve put Dr Singer’s pin over the logo 3 times in the last 5 years. First for the headshot photo I in 2010, second when I attended the 2014 ICCC9 conference in Las Vegas, and for the third time when I went to the ICCC10 conference in DC this year. I don’t wear ball caps and there is no way on Earth you can prove that I do. All you have at your disposal is 911Truther-style, ChemTrail believer-style, creation science believer-style conspiracy theory.

Face it, friend, even your pals are probably thinking you walked straight into your own self made implosion. Crow that I’m paid/instructed to say what I say, you still will never prove it.

Dude. I do “let the material speak for itself” at GelbspanFiles and in the presentation I gave. That is precisely why you are enslaved to sidestepping what I point to and misdirecting people about it.

Once again, this is your wakeup call. Why do you not properly describe or dispute the sentence I pointed to on pg 360 of Al Gore’s book? If Gelbspan discovered those memos like Gore said in 2006, and Gelbspan’s earliest mention of ’em is 1995, how does it follow that Gore quotes from that same set in 1992? Or do you sidestep this and all the other problems I describe because they undermine the collective accusation narrative so badly?

          4. Russell, you are really starting to lose it (and you say YOU live rent-free in MY mind? LOL). Have you noticed that no one other than you and I has commented on this thread since 9/6? And that after that ONE comment, it has been a private conversation between us. Why do you persist? I have been doing it for fun—-it’s better than crossroad puzzles and a good break from reading books, but you have no sense of humor and don’t read books (at least science books), so that can’t be your motivation. Also, FYI, I have been slowly analyzing your “How Green I Am” piece, and based on what I see there so far, I will repeat my advice to seek professional help before you suffer a complete break with reality. You display many worrisome symptoms there.

This continued insistence on debating “the hat” is quite worrisome and your strutting around thinking that I have “walked straight into my own self made implosion” is downright scary in its delusion, as is the “prove it” BS. I hope your mom won’t find you sitting on the floor and rocking in a catatonic state chanting “prove it” the next time she comes down to the basement to check on you

And do you not understand that there is NO relevant material in the Gelbspan Files, and it has nothing to say to those of us who frequent Crock and want to discuss real science and present day personalities? Why are you talking about “page 360” (is that the real page #?) and what happened in 1992, 1995, and 2006?.

Our wakeup call to YOU is the same one delivered by Tommy Lee Jones as the Marshal to Harrison Ford as the Fugitive—-“We don’t care”—–so maybe it’s time for you to do a “Fugitive” and leap?. If you really believe your inane BS “undermines the collective accusation narrative so badly?”, you are deluded to the point that there is little hope for you. The revelations in M of D, in the Koch climate denial funding exposes, and now the release of the 33-year-old Exxon documents are tightening the noose, and you may want to jump before you’re pushed.
