People under 25 might not realize it, but ‘Thundersnow” was not a common part of North American winter in the 20th century.
I had never heard the term till the last decade or so.
So many surprises in store..

Yep, thundersnow was rare back in the day. I was only exposed to it once before 2000, but a couple of times since. The recent episodes were just tame “rumblings”, but the one back in the 80’s was downright spectacular—-I was trying to get home but it was snowing and blowing heavily, and traffic was making at best 5 mph. The thunder was low overhead, constant, and it was like being in an artillery barrage—actually a bit scary.
I remember thundersnow during the storm in Boston in 1978. The storm lasted about two days and shut the city down for a week.
I now live in southern California, so thunder of any kind has been rather rare lately.
