If the goal was to add fire to the culture wars, then Maher did a great job at that. He could have cited these recent articles instead of making cheap cultural, regional, and sexual cracks:

Maher was a bit hard on the Senator, who sounds as if she should change her name to Joni Earnest.
But it is hard to take any Republican Senator seriously at the moment, until you think of the damage they might do. A clown car might be funny, but not when it is going down an up ramp at 100mph.
Given that the GOP are currently performing their own version of the Monty Python show I think laughing at them is a perfectly appropriate response.
Satire is one of the few remaining tools now that the fossil-fuel lobby is beyond parody.
