  1. Well, I’m sure CBS thought: What can be the hook for Americans? Ah, coffee! “Don’t go thinking this will affect only people you don’t care about on the other side of the world; it’ll affect your coffee habit.” So, that’s sad — but perhaps accurate. I’m glad the report didn’t include an interview with someone who disagreed with the report. (Or ask for comment from the head of the American Petroleum Institute.) I wish it had been longer and included more details. It was fairly superficial — but not much can be said in two minutes.

  2. Superficial, trivial, forgettable. You would think that what should qualify as one of the most serious problems facing our species would merit more than a throwaway sound bite.

  3. The coffee part was rather lengthy and it could have emphasized on more critical staple diet crops, but better than nothing or disputing highlights with a darned denialist.

  4. Pretty simplistic – but Americans might think about their coffee supply!

The IPCC Impacts report is on all the news now – but will again be forgotten in 48 – 72 hrs.

Justin Bieber, the Kardashians, sports – those are the real newsworthy topics in the modern media version of bread and circuses for the plebiens!

    Depressing, isn’t it?

  5. Pragmatic approach. Using the coffee might just catch the attention of the the hone audience. Worrying that we are only at that stage, but if it gets a fairly inward looking nation to start understanding that it is going to affect their pockets and daily habits then of some value.

  6. Played all right in NZ….
An element of trivialisation, but you have to start ramming the message home somewhere and the morning cup of coffee is as good and immediate as anything.

However, they won’t start to panic until they’re hit by a whole raft of shortages and price hikes at the supermarket and I don’t envisage the politicians doing anything until the tsunamis of zombies…sorry, climate refugees are swarming over the walls of the gated communities.

  7. switch from coffee to tea–problem solved!

That felt like the takeaway for me. I’d bet, as usual, that the IPCC reports won’t have any real legs so this was their one shot to get the news out there and CBS punted on the massive energy transition that has to happen and the consequences if we fail.
