The full court press against climate denying politicians continues. To those who say this can’t possibly make a difference, I would say, think of all the ridiculous right wing memes that gained currency simply by repetition from the Fox/Limbaugh echo chamber. (gore invented the internet, death panels, kenyan birth certificate, weapons of mass destruction,….)
“Climate denier” is now shorthand for those that do not accept mainstream science of the atmosphere – and that’s primarily because a few stubborn folks just kept saying it, and saying it…
New York ad agency Barton F. Graf 9000 has turned its roguish attention to the issue of climate change, and helped activist group 350 Action with the amusing video below. According to the YouTube description: “Since 1954, the World Meteorological Organization has been naming extreme storms after people. But we propose a new naming system. One that names extreme storms caused by climate change, after the policy makers who deny climate change and obstruct climate policy. If you agree, sign the petition at climatenamechange.org.” The snarky tone preaches to the choir, but it’s hard to resist lines like, “If you value your life, please seek shelter from Michele Bachmann.”

Absolutely not. We all have better things to do and these people are beyond shame.
They need to be voted out and to fade into obscurity. Anything that keeps their name in the public sphere is a victory for them.
Ridicule and shame them — excellent idea! The entire country should be made aware of their flimflam.

Sounds like fun, but it’s childish and serves no useful purpose. I’m with MorinMoss on this; we’ve got better things to do with our time. It may be unfathomable to us but a lot of people admire these politicians. Do we win over hearts and minds with more ad hominem? Or does it have the effect of entrenching an already embattled perspective?
Let people save face with grace.
Anyways, hurricanes have no surnames. If there’s a Hurricane Michelle, or James, we can have our little fun pretending their full names in snarky blog posts. Save the dollars wasted on an ad agency for other things.

I would disagree as it could cause unecssary confusion between groups such as the Tea Party Republicans and weather events.
One is a vast swirling vortex spreading chaos, havoc and misery and the others are called hurricanes ;o its too easy to get them confused
Then again, humor is a better outlet than anger… This is really too serious a business to be serious about. If that makes any sense. Hope it plays on Comedy Central?

If this was just a funny video it would be ok but it is asking us to try and influence the World Meteorological Organization. If the WMO were to do this (and I’d bet the farm they wouldn’t) they would be accused of politicking. The names we give to hurricanes really don’t matter, so this idea is to an extent trivializing the problems of both climate denial and extreme weather. This is the most ill concieved idea I’ve seen since the 1010 video.
What if Andrew Weiner was a climate denier? Imagine the headline: Weiner pounds the East Coast. 😛
