I think in all my studies nothing has explained human behavior as well as Dr Don Beck’s Spiral Dynamics. It’s a theory of the evolution of consciousness and how it relates to human communication and behavior. He used it effectively to help South Africa to transition out of apartheid to a democratic state.

We’re stuck in the Blue (authoritarian) and Orange (achievist) levels when what we need are more folks at Green (communitarian) and Yellow (integrative) to extend our concerns beyond our own self interest and work for the best for the planet and the future. We’re not evolving in consciousness fast enough to save us, I fear. But every little bit helps.

My friend’s favorite quote from the interview: “we are going to evolve through crisis, not through proactive change.”
So, forget about fretting for the future. Flood barriers on the New York Subway system? Fuggedaboutit. We’ll buy bigger pumps to clear the drowned tubes after the next Sandy-storm. Move New Orleans to higher ground? Fuggedaboutit. We’ll rebuild where the crappy pumps we’re paying billions for will fail once again.
We’ll adapt. To drowning. Until we don’t any more. 🙂
We won’t die from drowning. Unless you decide to live behind a large levy increases in sea level will be slow enough to run for higher grounds.
If we burn all our carbon it’s much more likely to die from H2S poisoning from an anoxic ocean – or a heatwave.
But anyway … the “Limits to growth” problem is real. Search youtube for “Richard Heinberg”. He has some interesting lectures about the peak production of many resources we depend upon.
