Black Carbon and Soot on Arctic Ice – Survey from the Air

Small, new, remotely-operated, unmanned aircraft are being flown in the Arctic to measure black soot. The soot is produced by burning diesel fuel, agricultural fires, forest fires, and wood-burning stoves. It is transported by winds to the Arctic, where it darkens the surface of snow and ice, enhancing melting and solar warming. See http://saga.pmel.noaa.gov/ andhttp://www.pmel.noaa.gov/edd/manta.html

  1. Black soot is not a pollutant, it’s 100% natural. How do you even know black soot comes from human emissions? There’s black soot on Venus, explain that!

  2. Maurizio just wants to take away people’s freedom to enjoy nice things like log fires and BBQs, even though most soot comes from China and India.

    No to a BBQ tax!

  3. Mercury is dark. I suppose that’s because the Mercurians are having too many BBQs!
