Fully Charged: Explaining Electric Cars

Pilot for a series – fun explanation of how electric cars work, and how they’ll fit in the transportation system of the future.

Below the jump, my vid on how electric and hybrid cars will work with the new “smart grid”.

  1. Renault ad on Italian national radio station today, about the new electric vehicles. They made them sound cool and it was going great, until the narrator said: “distance between recharges: 180km”.

I do not think they’ll be a success, whatever the price.

I would have waited until those cars could break at least the 300km mark…as they stand, they’re going to compete against walking. The risk is they’ll become an object of ridicule as soon as owners get stranded.

    1. I think the gentleman in the video did a good job of making the case for limited range EVs.
In any case, progress will be swift on this front.

    2. Could there be a more resounding endorsement for success than ‘omnologos’ predicting failure?!

I imagine your descendants throughout the ages predicting the failure of fire, the wheel, the steam engine, the aeroplane…. 😉

  2. 180km? How many people travel further than this on a regular basis? I sometimes do when I visit people in country towns, but most city people would rarely do more than 50k in a day – and that’s not all in one trip.

Simple 20-30 minute recharging in parking areas in cities and shopping centres and at rest stops on country roads can take care of most of this. It usually takes that long for a toilet stop plus buy a snack or a proper meal. Add in a few ‘drive-thru’ battery exchange points and the not-much-of-a-problem is solved.

    1. BTW…it is still me (maurizio morabito-omnologos). I just tried the new WordPress commenting facility using the twitter account.
