The man accused of monkey wrenching a controversial oil and gas auction was found guilty Thursday afternoon.
Tim DeChristopher, 29, claims he did it in the name of climate justice. However, his defense has been limited to whether or not he actually committed the crime. On the witness stand, DeChristopher said he made the decision to start bidding in part as a protest to the sale of oil and gas leases in some of Utah’s most pristine redrock country.
Now there will be a sentencing decision, in which the prosecution has announced they will not seek the maximum penalty.
The potential penalties range from 10 years in prison to probation.
