Open protocols such as LonWorks ensure you do not get tied down to one company, opening the market to competition and interoperability. I wonder if Zigbee is the right choice for smart grid devices?
what’s frustrating is they will roll this out with Zigbee only, instead of leaving LAN ports or some other way to connect so they can save cost. Zigbee is going to be everywhere in several years so we’ll all have to get good at troubleshooting WiFi/channels.
But otherwise this is very exciting. CES just has a suite of smart appliances showcased.
