“Unlike any Storm”- Florida Infrastructure Fails with Debby

These stories keep coming days after Hurricane Debby has moved on.
Supercharged with moisture from a bathtub warm Gulf of Mexico, the barely Cat 1 hurricane dropped enough water to overwhelm storm sewers even in areas that were not categorized as flood zones. This report from a Tampa TV station centers on a Sarasota community.
In the report, Florida State Senator Joe Gruters, (“free market” Republican of course) calls for taxpayer bailouts for homeowners, many of whom did not have flood insurance.
The “C” word does not come up in the report.

  1. I wonder at what point or how long it will take for ‘unprecedented, never seen anything like this’ reports will break through climate change denialism? To have a senator ask for an explanation and inquiry when the answers are already and easily available demonstrates where wilful blindness leads: ignorance. And it’s not a virtue.

Perhaps someone will be kind enough to refer the good senator to this site to start his journey back to reality.

  2. Sorry, but requiring developers to determine if all of their new construction and paving will cause a negative environmental impact is just nanny state government overreach. Also, don’t you dare raise property taxes to pay for upgrades and constant maintenance of the drainage and sewage systems.

    1. Gosh, maybe it’s time for more radical solutions. Since we can’t stop it anyway, embrace southern Florida emptying out, reducing the harm that irrationally petulant state does to national politics. Reducing it from 1 of the biggest solidly red states with a huge impact on presidential elections to a minor annoyance, & 5 or 10 fewer seats in the House will help us some.

      1. The Haves will leave first, of course, and the property tax base death spiral will leave less services for those remaining, from road maintenance to clinics.

I think of all of those economic and hurricane refugees from Puerto Rico that have moved to their affinity communities in the continental US, many of which are in Florida. They’ll have to move again.

  3. Spread the word: If your house floods, take pictures and then waste no time in ripping out the affected flooring, wallboard and insulation. Do not wait for the insurance inspector to see it first.

  4. What can you say when there is so much denialism ? I’ve been talking about climate-change for about 20 years . I’m now 65 and I live in Glasgow , Scotland and I’ve been around the radical Left basically my entire adult life and I’m perplexed (to say the very least !) at the Lefts’ inability/unpreparedness to actually even recognise what is happening to the ecology/environment/biosphere , caused most prominently by global-warming but not exclusively so . Basically , I am beyond surprise but the guy who says that the houses that were flooded were almost 30 feet above sea-level still rocked me , records just don’t mean anything now ! Effectively , I’ve given up , we have opened The Gates of Hell .
