Climate Protests: Productive or No?

My biggest peeve against climate radicals is the tendency to lump potential allies in with obvious fossil fuel villains. Targeting is important.

Above, climate protesters at the US Open rubbed some fans the wrong way.
Did it help the cause?

Below, Tennis player Coco Gauff, whose match was interrupted, says she sympathizes with the protesters goals.

In another incident, protesters showed up at an orchestra concert

Below, protesters seeming to thrive under a water cannon in the Netherlands.

  1. I wonder if Extinction Rebellion would do better as Extortion Rebellion as with, say, threatening to protest a theater production if the theater accepts sponsorship from FF companies.

  2. These are inconvenient. I suspect in 20 years the real protests will begin. They aren’t going to be pretty, since the rightwing has been spoiling for a fight for decades now.

    1. 20 years into the future might be far too late – I hope the current effort (and protests) in stopping carbon emissions has paid off well before 2043. It is truly shocking that protests are still necessary and so many governments are not taking more urgent action. People will be eventually fighting for survival rather than protesting, and that certainly won’t be pretty.

  3. The world, meaning most humans, are acting as if this isn’t a climate emergency. We just want to watch a couple of people hitting a ball back and forth and drink our beers in peace, dagnabbit! Leave us alone from all this climate nonsense, I’m late for work!

Nothing is more important than saving the Earth’s biosystems and helping ease the burden that a great many future generations will have. It’s an emergency. You pull to the side of the road when the ambulance passes, you put industry and governments on a war footing, you rush to help others. We’re doing none of those things as a society. We’re fixated on BS instead. All we care about is ourselves and our petty little needs at that exact moment, instead.

Many, many, many protests for decades at ‘appropriate venues’ have had little to no effect. The news media, much to its shame, focuses on the brash and sensational. Getting climate in the news is vital.

Personally, I’m for any non-violent protest – anywhere, anytime, anyhow. People need to take the eff up when we’re all still asleep at wheel.

  4. “When asked about their views of Thunberg and Fridays for Future – on a scale ranging from “very negative” to “very positive” – the majority of respondents said they looked favorably on both her and the movement. Did that translate into concrete changes in their everyday habits? Yes, according to nearly 30% of respondents.”
